Private Hugh James Stewart – Service Number A22156

Hugh was born 30 September 1891 in Belfast. He had 3 brothers and 5 sisters – the family lived at Newington Street, Duncairn, Belfast. Later, during the war his parents lived at ‘Fernleagh’ Downshire Road, Belfast. Hugh was employed as a Clerk before emigrating. He sailed from Liverpool to Quebec, Canada, in May 1912, with a stated destination of Winnipeg, Manitoba. In January 1915 Hugh enlisted, in Winnipeg, with the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force and was assigned to Canadian Infantry (8th Battalion). He was later transferred to France. On 8 September 1916 he ‘Died of Wounds’, aged 24 and is buried at the Puchevillers British Cemetery in France. Hugh is commemorated on both the Cregagh and Newington Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour.
