Rifleman Hugh McKinley – Service Number 9220

Hugh was born 31 May 1892 in the Bloomfield area of Belfast. His father died when Hugh was about 3 years old and his mother re-married a couple of years later, to a Print Compositor called Joseph Young. They lived at ‘Wynella’ 117 Cregagh Road, Belfast, during the war. Hugh was Killed in Action on 26 October 1916, aged 24, whilst serving with the Royal Irish Rifles (1st Battalion) in France. His name is among those on the Thiepval war memorial to the missing from the Somme, in France. 2 of Hugh’s half-sisters were baptised at Cregagh – these are among the first entries in the Cregagh Presbyterian Church baptismal register.
