Lance Sergeant Joseph Harper – Service Number 13031

Joseph was born 19 November 1893 in Belfast. He had 4 brothers and 2 sisters and lived with his parents at Coburg Street, Belfast. His father was a Commercial Traveller. Joseph worked as a Labourer before the war. When war broke out, he enlisted with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Joseph was Killed in Action on 9 September 1916, aged 22. His name is among those on the Thiepval war memorial to the missing from the Somme, in France. A War Gratuity of £12 was paid to Joseph’s mother as a result of his death. His older brother Charles served with the 9th North Staffordshire Regiment and survived the war – he is listed on the Cregagh Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour to those from the church who served with the armed forces during the war.
