2nd Corporal Robert Stevenson – Service Number 41628

Robert was born 24 September 1891 in Belfast. He had 5 brothers and 2 sisters – the family lived on the Woodstock Road, Belfast – they later moved to The Mount. Robert worked as an Iron Moulder before the war and lived at Rowan Street, Belfast. On 16 April 1910 Robert married Martha McDowell at St. Pauls Church of Ireland, Belfast. They had a son, Robert, born in August 1914 when WW1 had just started. Robert served with the Royal Engineers in the Middle Eastern war theatre. He was Killed in Action on 1 May 1918, aged 26, in Mesopotamia. His name is among those on the Basra war memorial to soldiers with no known grave, in Iraq. A War Gratuity of £18 – 10s was paid to Robert’s widow as a result of his death. Robert’s younger brother Aubrey who served with the Royal Irish Rifles, was Killed in France, in August 1917.
